Confronting RTA (continued from page 6)

not support our demands. They did agree to meet with us again in two months. At that time we will follow up on all the goals we presented.

The group revealed their reactions to Mr. Terango's responses to the TBN demands in a question and answer period. Would RTA send their bus drivers and security guards to the Rape Crisis Center training sessions? Many women in the audience were angry at bus and rapid drivers' and security guards' insensitivity to women riders. RTA agreed to contact the Rape Crisis Center.

The group was very dissatisfied with Mr. Terango's refusal to consider an increase in the security force. Terango urged the women to report incidents after they occurred. The women were angered by RTA's emphasis on after-the-fact followup, rather than prevention.

The group demanded that RTA be responsible for incidents occurring on its property, just as a department store provides security on its premises. Selling transportation that is unsafe to use is not acceptable to us. Women told story after story of unsafe RTA conditions, and insisted that RTA take responsibility for security on their grounds.

One woman noted that, according to a recent Cleveland Press article, while federal funds are available both for training and for new equipment, RTA is using the money for new equipment only. Again, women asserted that RTA was choosing property over people and demanded that the priorities. change.

Much discussion centered around the new plush offices, the large salaries and travel benefits of RTA executives.

There was a demand for a shift in priorities at RTA and for an increase in the safety budget. We decided to attend the next board meeting, on September 30, to make our demands known to the Board. A small group of women did attend, and presented the five demands. Although there was of course no inmediate discussion or action on these demands, the Chairman of the RTA Board of Trustees agreed to attend the next TBN open meeting on RTA.

TBN will continue to meet, follow up on the

demands we presented, and plan the next meeting with RTA. We will not stop until RLA listens to our concerns and women gain their treedom of movement. All RTA commitments from this meeting will be confirmed at the next meeting in two nonths (time, place and date to be announced). It promises to be a very important, and hopefully a frutiel, evening.

Any woman who wants to come to our meetingand participate in our activities and decision-making is welcome. We meet on Thursday evenings at CSU, Room 364, usually at 7:30 p.m. Call 321-7488 or 641-9481 for further information,
